What drives car insurance prices in Toronto
Toronto is Ontario's largest city, with about 2.8 million people at the 2021 Census, and its insurance prices reflect that density: more traffic and more vehicles to steal. A published 2026 comparison puts Toronto's average quote at $2,348 a year, above that comparison's Ontario average of $2,132.
The biggest local factor of the past few years has been theft. Toronto had the costliest auto theft claims of any Ontario city in 2025, even after thefts fell from a 2023 peak. Insurers price that risk by postal code and by vehicle model, so two drivers with the same record can see very different quotes in different parts of the city.
Toronto car insurance by the numbers

- Every Ontario policy must include at least $200,000 in third-party liability, plus statutory accident benefits and uninsured automobile coverage. (FSRA standard policy)
- For new policies starting on or after July 1, 2026, only medical, rehabilitation and attendant care benefits are mandatory; income replacement, caregiver and housekeeping benefits became optional. (FSRA standard policy)
Before you compare quotes in Toronto
- Since July 1, 2026, income replacement and some other accident benefits are optional on new policies. Ask the broker what dropping them would save and what you'd give up, especially if you rely on your paycheque.
- Ask whether a tracking device or other anti-theft measure changes your price; some insurers treat high-theft models differently.
- Have each driver's licence history, any claims or tickets from the last six years, and your current renewal ready so quotes are accurate.
- Compare the same limits and deductibles across quotes; a lower price with $200,000 liability isn't comparable to one with $2 million.

No. Savings depend on your profile, coverage needs, provider, and market conditions.
Why is car insurance more expensive in Toronto than elsewhere in Ontario?
Insurers price by claims in your area. Toronto combines heavy traffic with the highest auto theft claims costs in the province, so average quotes run above the Ontario average.
Has falling car theft lowered Toronto premiums yet?
Thefts dropped sharply in 2024 and 2025, but published averages still rose in 2026. Rates follow claims costs with a lag, so ask a broker how your insurer is treating your vehicle model now.
