Why Brampton drivers pay more

Brampton grew more than 10% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses, and it's now the most expensive major city in Ontario for car insurance. A 2026 comparison put the average quote at $3,471 a year, nearly $1,000 above Mississauga next door.

Two things drive that. Brampton had the second-highest auto theft claims costs in Ontario in 2025, up 565% since 2017. And Peel Regional Police have been investigating staged collisions and inflated claims involving tow and repair businesses. Those are allegations, not proven in court, but claims costs like these flow into everyone's premiums.

  • Across Ontario, the regulator's average annual premium for private passenger vehicles was $2,218 over the 12 months to June 2026, up from $2,006 in October 2024. (FSRA average premium, June 2026)
  • Every Ontario policy must include at least $200,000 in third-party liability, plus statutory accident benefits and uninsured automobile coverage. (FSRA standard policy)

Before you compare quotes in Brampton

  • If you're in a collision, call your insurer before agreeing to a tow, and choose where the car goes. Unsolicited tow trucks at crash scenes are a known fraud risk in Peel.
  • Since July 1, 2026, income replacement and some other accident benefits are optional on new policies. Ask the broker what dropping them would save and what you'd give up, especially if you rely on your paycheque.
  • Ask whether a tracking device or other anti-theft measure changes your price; some insurers treat high-theft models differently.
  • Have each driver's licence history, any claims or tickets from the last six years, and your current renewal ready so quotes are accurate.
  • Compare the same limits and deductibles across quotes; a lower price with $200,000 liability isn't comparable to one with $2 million.

Local facts last reviewed October 2026. Figures are published averages and public data, not quotes; your premium depends on your own details.
