Flooding is the risk Mississauga is paying to reduce

The August 2024 storms hit Mississauga hard, contributing to more than $100 million in insured damage across the GTA. In February 2025 the City launched a basement flooding rebate of up to $7,500 for prevention work, plus up to $3,000 for homes that have flooded before.

For home insurance, that means two things. Make sure your quote includes sewer backup and overland water coverage, and if you've flooded since 2013 or plan to install a sump pump or backwater valve, look at the rebates first. Region of Peel also offers a separate backwater valve rebate.

Mississauga and Peel programs that can help

  • Basement Flooding Prevention Rebate (City of Mississauga). Up to $7,500 toward sump pumps, downspout disconnection and other prevention work for owners of detached, semi-detached, duplex and townhouse homes, using a licensed installer. (City of Mississauga, Feb 2025)
  • Flood Resilience Rebate (City of Mississauga). Covers 50% of materials, labour and tax, up to $3,000, for homes that have had flood damage since July 8, 2013. (City of Mississauga, Feb 2025)
  • Sanitary Backwater Valve Rebate (Region of Peel). 60% of the invoice, up to $1,500 including tax, for valves installed after July 16, 2024, with a permit and inspection. Confirm with the Region that the program is taking applications before you book the work. (Region of Peel)

Before you compare quotes in Mississauga

  • Check whether your policy covers sewer backup and overland water. They're often separate add-ons, and they're the coverages that matter after a flash flood.
  • If you install a backwater valve or sump pump, keep the invoice and permit. Some insurers ask about them, and city rebates require them.
  • Ask how the deductible works for water claims; some policies set a separate, higher water deductible.
  • Get a replacement-cost estimate for your home rather than using its market value; rebuilding and land price are different numbers.
